Artists working with social media

Artists work with social media:

With social media integrated into our daily lives, the online world has become a social world where we buy, sell, advertise and even just publish our art work. Social media has allowed artists a free platform, to display their artwork and its journey. For example, Banksy used Instagram to reveal that the famous shredding of his art at an auction was all him, he created a video explaining how he had built the shredder months before and installed it himself. The video instantly had a major response being shared and commented on almost 100,000 times and making front pages of the newspaper. The video has over 14 million views. This is evidence of how powerful social media is and can impact an artist.

Leah Schrager is a web artist, whom has a fascination with digital art and incorporating the female body. The artist has a very unique approach when it comes to her art, as she appears to have alter egos in which she portrays in her work. Schrager is a former model who decided to use the female body in her art as she knows its what people want to see.

In an interview for Kaltbult Magazine, Schrager states that “social media has allowed her to interact with different people through different usernames”[1] giving her insight into the actual reality of people’s views on her art. With the internet revolutionized viewing art, she explains that social media has created an audience so art can be both “general populist audience and intention art-going audience at the same time” which is exciting for her”[2] as it breaks the boundaries of traditional art incorporating “freedom and interaction”[3]
